Helping us to care for pets

Looking after our pets can take up lots of time and money - especially if your pet is ill and needs the special help of a vet.

Discuss your pets in class and how you look after them. Do you ever have to take them to the vets?

Luckily, there are a number of organisations which help people to look after their pets and help them afford expensive vets' bills. One of these organisations in the PDSA.

Today you are going to explore the work done by the PDSA and then help to raise some money for their vital work.

First team up with a partner and use the links at Find out more to learn more about the PDSA. Find the answers to these questions:

  • What kind of organisation is the PDSA?
  • Give three examples of things it does to help animals.
  • Why do you think the PDSA has been so useful during the credit crunch?
  • With your partner think up an idea for something you could do in school to raise money for the PDSA. It could be a sponsored silence, a car boot sale or even your school's own version of the X Factor!
  • Design a poster advertising your event. Include facts from your research. Choose an eye-catching picture to grab people's attention.

As a class vote on the best idea and poster. Perhaps you can persuade your head teacher to let you hold your event in school!

Tell us what you think about the newsdesk story at Have your say. Longer reports, or podcasts, can be sent to Be a reporter. We'll put the best on the site.
