Secondary activity

Rights and responsibilities

As a class read the story through again and then split into groups.

What do you think about it? How does it make you feel? Why do you think David was targeted?

Take a piece of paper and write down the rights that all of the people in this story should enjoy - this could be anything from the right to feel safe in your own home to the right to wear a hoodie without being branded as a "yob."

  • David
  • David's family
  • Neighbours
  • Youths - part of the gang that terrorised David
  • Other young people in the area
  • Police

Put a tick against any right that you think these people got - now what does your piece of paper look like?
What rights should we all be able to enjoy?
How can we protect these rights?

Now think about how the rights of someone with learning disabilities can be improved?

What do you think might have helped to protect David and his family from such misery?

What would you do to try and tackle anti-social behaviour - can you come up with one policy that you all agree on?

Send us your views to Have your say and we will put the best ones on the site.

cctv

CCTV had been installed at David's home to try and deter the yobs - but it obviously didn't work
