Butterflies in danger

HyperLink

Britain's rarest butterfly, the beautiful Duke of Burgandy, is almost extinct after a series of wet summers.

Fifty years ago, English woods were full of Duke of Burgandy butterflies but now there are only healthy numbers of them in five places.

The Duke of Burgandy is not the only butterfly in trouble. The Lulworth skipper also suffered its worst year last year. Its numbers have declined by 78% in 18 years.

Other rare species including the pearl-bordered fritillary, the high brown fritillary and the wood white are also in serious decline.
