Afghanistan discussion

The growing amount of troops who have died since the start of the mission in Afghanistan has led to many people asking why are British troops still there and isn't it about time we left?
In groups discuss the following:

  • When would it be acceptable for foreign troops to enter another country?
  • When would it not be acceptable?
  • What, according to the story, are British troops doing in Afghanistan?
  • Do you think they have been successful?
  • If you were the prime minister of the Great Britain what would you do?
  • If you were the president of Afghanistan what would you do?
  • What do you think life is like for the troops in Helmand province?
  • What makes someone want to join the army and fight for their country?
  • Finally, in your groups, answer the question - can war and killing in the name of war ever be justified?

You can use the internet to help you with your discussion.
